What even is a Mazda DTC Code?!
We're so glad you asked! You've definitely come to the right place with your questions about Mazda DTC Code(s).
First, "DTC" means Diagnostic Trouble Code. This code is used to diagnose malfunctions and errors in vehicles. In fact, they can even tell you potentially why you're having an error code as well as where your issue is located.
Diagnostic Trouble Codes can also be referred to as an "engine vehicle fault code". Both are created by the vehicle's On-Board Diagnostics (OBD).
On the dashboard of the vehicle, check engine lights or other warning lights alert drivers when a vehicle has errors. In the event this occurs, a scan tool is required to read the code and the Mazda DTC code provided will interpret what error code is detected.
Comprehending OBD-II Diagnostic Trouble Codes
Diagnostic Trouble Codes are actually created in a way for people to easily understand and interpret.
First Character Meaning of DTC Code
First, the initial character of a DTC is (without exception) a letter. This letter represents which control system has an error. Generically speaking, the letters have the following potential values and definitions:
- B (Body) - If a Mazda DTC starts with the letter B, then the code is referencing parts that are generally located in the passenger compartment area.
- C (Chassis) - When a DTC starts with the letter C, the code is in connection with mechanical systems such as braking, steering, and suspension systems.
- P (Powertrain) - A DTC that starts with the letter P usually refers to the engine system, fuel system, and transmission system.
- U (Network) - The letter U in the beginning of a Mazda DTC means the error code is most likely in connection with the vehicle's onboard computers and related systems.
Second Character Meaning of DTC Code
Next, the second character of a DTC is going to be a 0 or a 1 that indicates the code is standardized or not.
- 0 - Indicates the code is standardized SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Code. Generic codes are built into all cars that follow the OBD-II standard.
- 1 - This means that the code is vehicle manufacturer specific and does not follow the OBD-II standard. DTC codes that have a 1 as the second character are for specific vehicle makes and models and are typically less common.
- 2 or 3 - Few and far between, but their meanings are dependent on the letter located at the beginning of the diagnostic trouble code. Shows the code is manufacturer specific with very little exceptions.
Third Character Meaning of DTC Code
Then, the third character is a number between 1-8 that identifies the subsystem at fault.
- 1 - Fuel Metering System or Air Metering System
- 2 - Fuel Metering Injection System or Air Metering Injection System
- 3 - Ignition System
- 4 - Emissions Systems
- 5 - Vehicle Speed Controls or Idle Control Systems
- 6 - Computer Output Circuit
- 7 & 8 - Transmission Related
Fourth & Fifth Character Meaning of DTC Code
Finally, the fourth and fifth characters are combined together as a two-digit number between 1-99, which will be known as the "specific fault index".
